When I get a spare hour I often wonder whether I would be better off  going to the gym or for a run around the park? The gym always seems to motivate me because of the pull of the sauna and steam room at the end- but there is a definite absence of vitamin D in the gym!

On a nice sunny day I think it is easier to run faster with a gentle,  breeze blowing through your hair.  You also have the added dimension of uneven terrain and varying gradients outside which challenge you a bit more, often without you even noticing as you are taking in the scenery.  Fresh air can also increase your oxygen increase which is good for your lungs and good for the soul!

If the weather is cold it is likely that you will run faster to keep warm and your body may burn more calories anyway just trying to keep warm.  Wind can be a problem and can go either way.  If you manage to keep the same pace whilst facing the wind then you will work a lot harder but if you give into the wind and walk then you won’t get as much of a work out.

As with most scenarios in the UK, the answer to this question seems to be weather dependent.  I guess variety is the spice of life and any exercise at all is better than nothing!  I will keep up my gym membership but try to exercise outside as well at least twice a week.
