LondonTaking a city break is a popular way of getting some well-earned time away from the rigours of daily life, but when you have children in tow it can be difficult to keep them entertained. There are only so many cathedrals and exhibitions that the younger ones can take. However, some of the best museums for children are in major cities such as London and Manchester, and cheap weekend breaks in the capital are always a delight for all the family.

Planning city breaks is about making sure you get the most out of your time away. If London is the chosen destination, and to be fair there are few more exciting cities in the world let alone the UK, then look for London hotels that offer discounts for families, and try and make sure you pick a hotel as central as possible.

Starting with the major attractions, the British Museum has a superb children’s section and many exhibitions that cater for a range of age groups. There are also special Family Activity Trails that offer exciting and engaging activities for all ages. offers excellent hotel packages and more, and is a useful site for organising a London holiday. Where kids and museums are concerned, few are better than the famous Natural History Museum. The dedicated Kids Only facility is superbly designed and offers excellent interactive activities, including the children’s favourite, Dinosaurs! This really is a superb place to take a family, and there is plenty of variety among the exhibitions.

A more unusual London museum is the Geffrye Museum, an excellent attraction dedicated to showing how our homes have changed throughout the ages. It may not sound ideal for kids at first, but they will enjoy the changing face of living rooms from the Middle Ages to now, and there are plenty of exhibits that are deliberately child friendly.

London is not the only UK city worthy of a weekend break. Manchester is ideal for a family holiday, and the hotels in Manchester are well priced. The city itself is compact and simple to traverse, and there are few more child-friendly museums than the Manchester Museum. Kids will love the dinosaur exhibits, and the Egyptian displays are always fascinating.

Further north and Newcastle upon Tyne is one of the most attractive of all UK cities. It is the gateway to the county of Northumberland and has plenty of attractions for kids. The stunning Roman relics at Vindolanda on Hadrians Wall are compelling, and there are plenty of live tours that will have the kids enthralled. Also, remember that Northumberland has more castles than any other county, and what better fun for children than clambering about on castle walls and watching re-enactments of medieval life?

The UK is a great place for short breaks with children, and whether you choose the capital or one of the many other great cities across the land there is plenty of excitement to be had.
